The first thought in my head was “Are they going to get it right for once?”. With the MCU being in a progressively downward spiral in quality the past few years and with the last 2 attempts at bringing the Fantastic Four to screen were barely watchable, there were a lot of concerns at my end including Pedro as Reed Richards. While not perfect, they did manage to finally bring the Fantastic Four to the screen in a good way.
The idea of having it in a 60s inspired universe was a risk which worked out well (There is something charming about the visuals of retro-future.) being able to maintain the original origin and not make it ridiculous. The team not only worked well together, but also each highlighted their own self just as much, especially Johnny/Human Torch who had significant character improvement from the previous incarnations. Silver Surfer becoming female was another risky endeavour that worked out, she was legitimately scary and vulnerable at the same time showing a lot of depth, and Galatus was also legitimately terrifying, with no other motive than to just feed. Also, the true leader and hero of the movie was definitely Sue.
Of the Fantastic Four, Reed was the least interesting and most underutilised, sure he was there more for his scientific brilliance but he was almost useless in battle. Which goes on to the next point, there weren’t many fight sequences, this is most likely due to the fact that there were only 2 villains the entire time. Also, this movie could actually have worked better as a sequel rather than the first movie of the series.
This is certainly the best rendition of the Fantastic Four and I’m hoping we’re going to see more of them after their First Steps.
I give this a 7.5/10.
Good:
- The team as a whole and each on their own
- Johnny stepping up throughout
- Silver Surfer and Galactus were both scary
- Visuals were beautiful
- Side characters were funny and likeable
Bad:
- Reed was underutilised
- Limited fight sequences
- Would’ve been better as a sequel
