materialists review

This movie, we had just heard about it the day of seeing it and decided to see what people were saying about it. The only thing that made me not want to see it was Dakota Johnson (Seriously, why is she famous?), but the rest of the cast and the concept of the movie seemed interesting.  While it was painful to watch and I saw too much of myself in Chris Evans’s character, it was realistic despite many unpleasant moments.

Modern dating is a septic tank now, everyone is picky on every aspect of a person, everyone will find any reason to turn someone down despite how petty the reason is, and it’s just impossible.  Materialists shows the reality of this through a Matchmaker who herself is also looking for someone and experiencing difficulties.  However, comes a complex love triangle which intertwines the past and future and realizing there is no true correct method or plan.

There aren’t really a lot of negative things to say about this film other than it has some really cringy (But realistic) and really depressing moments that are all too relatable.  You’ve either done them, or you’ve had them happen to you.

It’s a worthwhile watch, but it’s not something you’re going to want to see again, it also makes you wonder…what is a pefect match?

I give this a 8/10.

Good:

  • Character dynamics
  • Realistic portrayal of dating complexities

Bad:

  • Cringy and depressing at times
