Sinners Review

We went into this movie completely blind, not knowing what the story would be, what the genre was going to be, and basically knowing nothing except Michael B. Jordan is in it.  I am so happy we did that because this is probably going to be my favourite movie of 2025!

This is a rare movie where you can’t really label it as one genre, it was a (And I am being 100% serious) horror-action-musical and it blended all of them nicely.  It took place in post World War 1 and it showed a realistic view of what the USA was like afterwards, especially with segregation and the rising presence of the KKK.  The characters all had a lot of depth to them and even some of the villains don’t show their worst till later.  The diversity of the cast was done beautifully as well as it showed immigrant North Americans of all backgrounds in a respectful way.  At this point it’s been known that this is a vampire movie so we can discuss that part.  They weren’t the prototypical vampires that we’re used to, they were significantly more humanized and didn’t just look like pale corpses or were killed (Spoiler alert) in the typical fashion and with their bodies burning away.  Also Michael B. Jordan playing twins was done so well you literally thought there were 2 of them at the same time and the action was grounded as well as entertaining.

The music while it suited the movie was just not my style (Personal criticism) and some of the characters get forgotten till later on when they had a significant moment.

This movie is going to be one I will never get bored watching, the direction, the visuals, and the characters are all great and the use of more practical effects than CGI makes it timeless.

I give this a 9.5/10.

  • All the characters
  • Grounded for the most part
  • Blending several genres into one

Bad:

  • Wasn’t a big fan of the music
