thunderbolts review

This was certainly the most ambitious post Endgame MCU movie and it seemed to have a lot of promise, lesser-known characters, more grounded, more character and story focused and a story which you really weren’t able to determine through the trailers (A much nicer needed change.).  While expectations weren’t through the roof, we were all hoping for a good movie and it did deliver.

The team worked great as a whole and each character brought their own charm, from Yelena all the way through to Valentina and while Mel seemed to be a throwaway character at first, she developed into something complex.  It was great to have Winter Soldier back in the films without the reliance on Captain America and/or Falcon.  It had a good blend of humor, action, and true character development, and personally I always enjoy the complexity of villains, especially when they become one, without actually being one.

Since it’s based on lesser-known characters, you’d have to have seen a lot of the previous films, especially the disappointing Black Widow movie where 3 of the characters were prominent.  While I did say it was a good movie, it wasn’t great and ultimately I feel this one is very forgettable.

It is a fun movie, you’ll enjoy it, you’ll appreciate the character complexity but it won’t be too memorable.  Also, I feel this would’ve been better as a miniseries rather than a movie, could’ve expanded more on each character’s backstory and could’ve made Valentina even more sinister and vindictive than she already is.

I give this a 7.5/10.

Good:

  • Grounded for the most part
  • Complex character development
  • Fun and lighthearted
  • Sympathetic villain and evil true villain

Bad:

  • Forgettable
  • Some characters were significantly underutilised
  • Would’ve worked better as a miniseries than a movie
