The Monkey Review

That monkey toy is beyond creepy and it legitimately sends chills down my spine, so I was not planning to see this movie, but hearing it’s a horror comedy made me curious.  So now let’s get into what I can say is the funniest horror movie I’ve ever seen.

I’ll begin with a small trigger warning that a lot of people die in this movie, and death/grief is the main theme.  However, for the most part, while people die and die gruesomely it’s actually really funny how they were executed.  The deaths were also unpredictable and were very bizarre so you were able to watch them and laugh rather than being horrified.  It was well-paced enough and the main characters were interesting enough to keep you engaged the whole time.  Also again I would like to mention it was funny the whole time!

Out of the main characters, you felt nothing for anyone else, even when certain characters died whose deaths should’ve been impactful you felt nothing, granted this could’ve been done on purpose to keep the humor in the deaths. The family dynamics are nothing new and barely made you feel anything and the story itself was pretty unoriginal.

Overall it was the horror comedy that it was set out to be, and it’s a unique genre that I think needs to be explored more often.  Don’t go in expecting a masterpiece, don’t go in thinking it’s going to be groundbreaking, just go in expecting a (pun intended) a bloody good time!

I give this a 7.5/10!

Good:

  • Funny throughout
  • Main characters were interesting enough
  • Well paced

Bad:

  • Unoriginal plot and family dynamics
  • You never cared about anyone who died
