Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Review

When the first trailer came out, I was intrigued by the style and going with more vintage art and costumes but it also made me concerned that it was going to be campy and aimed at children.  Let me say first off I was completely wrong about that!  While the art is an acquired taste and beautiful in its own way, this show was not the juvenile content I was expecting at all!

The characters are all great, all of them!  They each provide significance to the show in their own way and they are all likable.  While it seemed it was going to cater to a younger audience by the visual aspect, the stories and themes aren’t.  It dealt with some heavy real-life themes and gave some characters a greater more complex dynamic.  The light-hearted humor kept it from being overly serious and for a nice change of pace, it’s for the most part unpredictable!

While the majority of the characters are great, there are very few mainstream Spider-Man characters, and the ones who are there are going to anger some people with how they’re portrayed (You’ll see why…).  The art style and costumes at first will seem strange but it does grow on you, even with the vintage costumes.  There is also a lot of Spider-Man lore that is modified to a point where you just wonder “Why?”.

This is a must-watch, it’s unpredictable for the most part, the characters new and familiar are all great and it’s going to lead to some great stories coming forward.  Great for old and new Spider-Man fans.

I give this a 9/10!

Good:

  • All the characters are great
  • Unpredictable for the most part
  • Mature stories and themes
  • Great for new and seasoned fans
  • Light hearted humor keeps it grounded

Bad:

  • Not a lot of mainstream Spider-Man characters
  • Villains for the most part were unknown
  • Character changes will make people upset (Not me!)
  • Art style is an acquired taste
