Get Up Aisha Review

After seeing Sana Asad on The Boys as a cameo I started following her on instagram and she was promoting her new show Wake Up Aisha.  It was something that hasn’t been done before but needed to be looked into, mental health in South Asian society.  A lot of times in South Asian society mental health is ignored, depression is looked at as fake and all anyone says for the most part is suck it up.

Well Get Up Aisha decided to do something different and it was done respectfully and realistically for the most part.  It showed someone of South Asian heritage legitimately going through severe depression while showing the world a smile.  It’s often how depression looks on people…a smile.

It showed a realistic process of someone trying to “cure” their depression and portrayed ways that have legitimate merits behind them which include fitness, social interactions and others which I will let you watch.  It also showed how your environment can affect your development whether good or bad.  One big thing it showed is that to heal yourself, you end up unintentionally becoming selfish and put aside people you care about, it’s never just a simple one way street.

The episodes are short which made caring about a lot of side characters difficult and a lot of the side plots were left unfinished/unresolved, this could be because they want to make a second season and want to expand the stories further.

Overall, it’s a quick easy watch but certainly deals with heavy subject matter in a respectful and relatable way and if you are also going through times like Aisha is, you may find some helpful content.

I give this a 7/10 check it out!

Good:

  • Relatable family dynamics
  • Aisha’s list is actually practical
  • Realistic portrayal of depression

Bad:

  • Besides Aisha and her mother you don’t care about any of the other characters
  • Short episodes, could’ve been a movie
