Detox your social media feed

So Social Media has been a big part of my life and career since I’ve basically started using it and while there is for the most part more good than bad, the unfortunate thing is the bad outweighs the good.  I have come to notice this a lot more since 2016 with the Far-Left and the Far-Right speaking out a lot more because of Trump.  I won’t get too political about this because I hate politics so I’ll get back to what I’ve come to discuss.

There is a lot that you can still appreciate about social media and you need to use it the right way, I wish I could say stop looking at ads but that is never going to be possible.  What you can do are some changes so it doesn’t become a toxic dumpster fire that ruins your mood or day.

Stop following celebrities

Seriously, what they show is not real life, what they show is not even their own real life.  They don’t show the work, sacrifices, the amount of time it takes for them to do what they are doing or even who they really are.  They always put up a positive public persona and we’ve seen what a facade it really is, either stop following them or reduce who you follow, especially the Kardashians!

Stop discussing politics

I know I’m being slightly hypocritical as I didn’t want to get too political but it’s the worst for Social Media.  There are few people who are in the middle, they’re either Far-Left or Far-Right and neither is good to follow.  There is just as much arrogance, hatred and anger on both sides and they will become abusive to one another.

Stop following useless influencers

The majority of them are parasites, they’re all looking for something for free to “promote” on their accounts.  I don’t know what else I can say about why you should not follow them that hasn’t been said about celebrities.  You need to provide something to offer whether it be educational or informative, and most of them do not provide anything besides trying to glamorise their own fake lives.

Mute people you don’t want to remove

We all have those friends and family members that we don’t want to remove because we love them, but their feeds are so annoying!  But we’re all trying to not hurt feelings and keep the relationship because we care, so mute them so you don’t have to worry about it.  They’ll never know unless you tell them or they look at your phone.

Use it for educational purposes

There are plenty of accounts available that can help you learn something, whether you want to learn new photography tips, want to know about products, want to get better at excel or even learn fitness tips.  This is the part where following an influencer can actually be beneficial, especially personal trainers.

One last thing I can say, is maybe finding ways to limit your access and exposure to it, keep it off your main phone and maybe stick to a time of your choosing to use it.  By all means these are my own suggestions and things I have done to help detox my feed.  While Social Media is a significant part of my career it doesn’t hurt to take care of yourself first.

What do you think are ways to have a healther relationship with Social Media?
