It’s strange how the Sonic franchise is showing that video game movies are actually a good and profitable idea.  So far each installment of the franchise has been on par with quality and consistently entertaining to watch and this one was no different.  While it’s the weakest in the franchise in my opinion, it’s not by all means bad.

So the big 3 are back, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and they’ve established a strong friendship/brotherhood from Sonic 2 and it’s fun as ever.  The movie keeps it’s usual light hearted tone from the previous 2 and Shadow was a great character.  They did a great job on Shadows backstory and showing why he is the way he is and for a pleasant change, this one focused more on the game characters rather than the movie additions.

The story itself is pretty predictable for the most part, there was never really a moment that you saw and were like “wow didn’t see that coming”, which isn’t a bad thing it still kept you interested and engaged.  The human characters for the most part were pretty much nonexistent besides the Robotnik(s), besides the ones in Shadows backstory.

In the end, like the other 2, Sonic 3 was a movie to enjoy and not take seriously, which we need more of nowadays.  I won’t give too much detail, but this certainly isn’t the end of the franchise and you’ll find out why after watching it.

I give this a 7.5/10.

Good:

  • Focused more on the game characters
  • Shadow
  • Jim Carey in the dual roles
  • Fun the whole time

Bad:

  • Predictable for the most part
  • Human characters besides Robotnik(s) insignificant for the most part
