Transformers One Review

Michael Bay really knows how to destroy our childhood nostalgia, let’s face it his Transformers movies were not great, dumb fun but overall not great movies. The biggest issue they focused too much on the humans when it was supposed to be about the transformers.  This is what made this movie an absolute delight, it was about the Transformers!  You get a lot more freedom with animated movies and you can make things where realism doesn’t necessarily need to be there.

So this was for a significant part a light-hearted take on Transformers, where they showed Optimus and Megatron in an inexperienced and almost innocent part of their lives.  The whole group of characters worked well together and had fun and funny interactions throughout.  It added some interesting new elements that changes the Transformers lore and allowed people who were not familiar with the franchise to have a fresh look and take on it.  The story was interesting and the character designs and overall art direction was beautiful and vibrant.

This new element of how Optimus and Megatron were best friends really has me conflicted, these are supposed to be mortal enemies from day one and never really had a past till they met in battle.  While it’s an interesting addition to the lore, it made no real logical sense to me to change that.  The story was actually interesting however, it was pretty predictable and you saw the outcome coming miles away.  Also the “big bad” was not very present in the movie, but they could come back for a sequel.

It’s a ton of fun, and frankly, it’s unappreciated.  Whether you’re a big Transformers fan or not, you will most likely enjoy it!

I give this one an 8/10.

Good:

  • Characters were all great
  • Interesting story
  • Vibrant use of colours

Bad:

  • The big bad threat wasn’t very present
  • Optimus and Megatron being friends was a weird change
  • Predictable story
