Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review

One of the most unnecessary sequels possible, they’ve been talking about it being made since Beetlejuice came out in 1989.  I loved the first movie so seeing a sequel coming out made me curious as to how they will make a sequel, especially after 35 years.

Beetlejuice hasn’t changed at all from the original, he was the same immoral character we all loved in the original movie.  Lydia has had her own unique development however, she is different from the original movie but has relatable personal dilemmas she’s going through.  Let’s now go on Astrid who was a gem the whole movie, the usual Jenna Ortega style of a charming, creepy. and scary character which we can all appreciate.  Also, the visibly limited use of CGI kept the movie the same art style which will help this movie have a timeless look to it, similar to the original.

However, besides the big 3 of Beetlejuice, Lydia. and Astrid, the remaining characters are meaningless, insignificant and/or unlikable besides Willam Dafoe’s Wolf who was a fun addition.  It also seemed they were trying to fit too many stories into the movie which really didn’t pan out, even the main story felt like lazy writing trying to force this movie to be made.

A lot of fun, some great nostalgia but overall an unnecessary sequel.  By all means not a bad movie and honestly the title makes me want them to make one more Beetlejuice movie now, I mean you kind of have to now make Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!

Fun movie I give it a 7/10.

Good:

  • Beetlejuice, Lydia and Astrid were great
  • Art direction similar to original movie
  • Fun throughout

Bad:

  • Rest of characters were insignificant
  • Story felt lazy
  • Unnecessary sequel
