“Batman: The Animated Series” is one of the best shows ever made, not just in the animated category. So when I heard Bruce Timm was coming out with a new Batman animated series, it got me excited. After seeing the trailer, I did become a little sceptical about the setting and timeline, but I was definitely going to watch it.

One thing I was not a fan of was the gender swap of Penguin. Let me state that I have no problem with gender or race-swapping characters, but you don’t need to change iconic ones. This one just felt unnecessary. There were a lot of classic Batman supporting characters in the show, but with different takes on them.

Unlike “Batman: The Animated Series,” this one had an overlapping storyline throughout the entire season, though each episode did have its own focused story. The characters were well-done. The action and aesthetics of the show were grounded for the most part, and each episode’s standalone story was interesting. The villains all had a dark portrayal that made them sincerely scary.

With the setting, they used old-school costumes, which I am not a fan of. Sure, I appreciate the classics, but they look weird. Also, the timeline setting felt like a gimmick to make it different from other Batman shows. They did manage to make both of these elements work collaboratively; however, I wasn’t a big fan of it.

Overall, it was consistently good throughout and kept you interested despite the setting and art direction. It’s worth the watch and has a lot of promise for what is to come. Plus, it certainly gives a lot of “Batman: The Animated Series” vibes.

Giving this a 7.5/10, go watch it!
