Some franchises go on way longer than they should’ve and Alien has had a lot of unnecessary installments throughout its existence regardless of a few bright spots outside of the original 2 movies. However, that changed very much with Romulus which is arguably my favourite movie of 2024!
ADirected by the same person who did the 2013 Evil Dead (A rare movie that actually terrified me) I was expecting to go in absolutely terrified and not enjoy it. However, it was very well written, directed, paced and acted. The characters were all great and relevant, they had good chemistry with one another and also didn’t have any forced interactions. There were throwbacks to the original Alien films which felt relevant to the plot. The movie also used limited CGI which allows it to remain timeless and have more rewatchability,
There are some references to the original movies that contemporary (Mainly Gen Z viewers) may not get, even though I didn’t get a lot of them. And I will say, I have never wanted to see a creature die so badly as the one at the end… I’ll let you see what I am talking about.
This is arguably the best addition to the franchise since Aliens, it is great for fans of the franchise and also in its own way works as a stand-alone. At the same time, it is not as scary as anticipated, that to me is a good thing.
Overall, it’s incredible and a must-watch, I give this one a 9/10.
Good:
- Story was unique enough for new audiences
- Beautiful set design in it’s own way
- Exciting throughout
- Acting was of quality
Bad:
- The end creature…just awful!
- Questionable choices by some of the characters (Cliche “horror” trend”)
